The Spanish broom is displaying fragrant blooms on the Systematic Beds.
The genus Spartium is monospecific, containing only this species S. junceum. It is an erect shrub with slender cylindrical stems and sparse, simple, deciduous leaves. Terminal racemes of golden-yellow, pea-like flowers comprising a broad, rounded standard are produced on the current year’s growth throughout summer and into autumn. Occurring throughout the Mediterranean it is well-suited to hot, dry positions and poor soils.
