Enjoying the moisture retentive soils of the Woodland Garden, this tree is displaying it’s delicate blooms.
A member of the tropical and subtropical family Styracaceae, the genus Sinojackia numbers only two species of seldom grown small trees, S. rehderiana and S. xylocarpa. This one has cymes of 3-5 pure white, pendant flowers hanging beneath elliptic-obovate leaves. The genus name derives from sino meaning Chinese, and ‘jackia’ from John George Jack (1861-1949) of the Arnold Arboretum, Boston, Massachusetts, while the specific name rehderiana honors Alfred Rehder (1863-1949), also of the Arnold Arboretum.
