This flowering pear can be seen full of blossom in the South Walk boundary.
A native of central and western China, Pyrus pyrifolia was first introduced to our gardens by Ernest Wilson in 1909. A fine specimen tree with a slender, upright habit, and reaching 12m in height, it produces loose corymbs of pure white, five-petalled flowers typical of the rose family (Rosaceae), to which it belongs. The globular fruits are approximately 4cm in diameter, and are hard and gritty in texture.
