This large, deciduous tree is displaying stout catkins at the eastern end of the Fairway.
This magnificent tree has alternate, pinnate leaves typical of the walnut family (Juglandaceae) to which it belongs, and although it also bears nuts, as other members of the family, those of Pterocarya are winged. It is a native of eastern Turkey, northern Iran and the Caucasus, and can reach great proportions, with stems growing to 30m in height. It has a suckering habit, and the ground around this specimen is pierced with young suckers, while the specimen near the Woodland Garden comprises multiple stems of mature suckers.
