The aspen is displaying downy catkins alongside the Lynch Walk.
Aspen, or Populus tremula, belongs to the willow family (Salicaceae), and is a native of northern Asia and Europe, including the British Isles. It has rounded leaves with irregular, blunt teeth, and these are held with flattened, flexible leaf stalks, which enable the foliage to flutter in a breeze, giving rise to the specific name tremula, meaning to tremble. The catkins are attractive in their soft, downy appearance, and male and female catkins are found on separate trees.
