The hollow stems of this bamboo are reaching for the sky beside the Lake.
A member of the grass family Poaceae, the genus Phyllostachys contains approximately 80 species of evergreen bamboos from eastern Asia and the Himalaya. They all have spreading rhizomes, hollow, grooved stems (or canes, or culms), and lance-shaped leaves. Phyllostachys viridiglaucescens (or green-glaucous bamboo) is a Chinese native with glossy green, woody stems reaching 8m in height, and with tapering, bright green foliage. It is a clump-forming species whose woody culms jostle against one another to make a gentle, hollow, rattling noise in the wind, and which makes a fine feature specimen where space allows.
