The caramel-coloured stems of this bamboo add interest to the Winter Garden.
The term bamboo applies to several genera of woody-caned, perennials from tropical and sub-tropical zones belonging to the Poaceae (grass family). This one, Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’ is a native of central China, and is noted for its rich-yellow canes. It is a clump-forming species, which will spread by rhizomes once established. The canes of this species often have a groove long their length, which earn it the name yellow-groove bamboo. P. aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’ makes a good focal point, and adds winter interest to the garden, especially when the lower leaves are removed to expose the richly-coloured culms.
