The petticoat daffodil is displaying a mass of blooms in the Mountains House.
One of 50 species of bulbous perennials Narcissus romieuxii is a lesser known daffodil from northern Africa which does well in pot cultivation, where it can be grown in a gritty, free-draining compost in a bulb frame of alpine house. A small bulb of approximately 1cm in length produces numerous fine leaves and solitary flowers. These have a narrow perianth tube which opens into a lightly lobed, broad corona from which emerge six anthers, and an extended style. The genus is believed to take its name from the Greek myth of Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool, and was turned into a daffodil by the gods.
