This elegant bulb can be seen growing beside the stream.
Comprising only two species of bulbous perennials, the genus Leucojum is native to moist woodland and meadows of central and southern Europe, the Caucasus, Turkey and Iran. Belonging to the daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae) both species have strap-shaped leaves, a distinct scape and pendent flowers with six petals. The spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum) grows to 30cm and produces stout, leafless stems and usually solitary flowers, while this one, the summer snowflake (Leucojum aestivum) reaches 60cm in height and carries up to eight nodding flowers per stem.
