Iris ‘Nightfall’ brings early season interest and colour to the Herbaceous Island Beds.
One of many hundreds of cultivars of bearded Iris, ‘Nightfall’ has alluring velvety, deep purple-blue falls, and contrasting mid-blue standards. Close inspection reveals a ‘beard’ of yellow hairs running down the centre of the falls. This is a familiar garden cultivar, having having been raised in the early 1940’s, and proven to be a reliable form. As with all the bearded iris it has stout surface-spreading rhizomes and strappy foliage arranged in a fan shape. All thrive in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. The genus takes it’s name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris.
