This dogwood takes on brilliant colours in low winter sunlight in the Winter Garden.
The Winter Garden is renowned for its show of vibrant colours through the dullest months, and the Cornus (dogwoods) are well worth inclusion here with their coloured stems of various shades. ‘Midwinter Fire’ is an erect shrub to 3m in height whose fiery, copper-orange colouring is more vibrant on new growth. It grows in all well-drained soils, and although it will grow in shade, it requires a sunny position and annual thinning of the stems to provide maximum impact. One of 45 species of trees and shrubs from northern temperate zones, C. sanguinea is a European species, and ‘Midwinter Fire’ is a selection of this.
