Our birch collection brings interest to the garden in winter, including this species, Betula pendula ssp. szechuanica.
Betula pendula, or the silver birch, is a native of Europe, including Britain, and Asia. This subspecies, szechuanica, is a Chinese variant occurring in Sichuan province. The leaf and habit is typical of our native silver birch, but the stem has an attractive pink-apricot tinge. Many members of the genus are similar in having graceful habit and peeling bark.
