This Bergenia can be scorched by frost, hence its positioning in the shelter of the Glasshouse Bays.
The genus Bergenia comprises approximately eight species of rhizomatous, ground cover species from meadows, rocky areas and woodland of central and eastern Asia. A member of the Saxifragaceae, the genus is distinguished by dense flower cymes of bell-shaped flowers and large, rounded foliage, which gives rise to the common name ‘elephants’ ears’. This species originates in the western Himalaya, and although having a hardy rhizome, the emerging hairy foliage and the flowers can be damaged by frost.
