The trees just south of the Chronological Bed are well worth exploring for the fruiting structures that develop in autumn.
The many Bean Trees Catalpa develop clusters of long pods that rattle all through the winter. Some are long, shiny and skinny, others are shorter, fatter and aubergine coloured.
Also here is an outstanding Koelreuteria paniculata which in autumn is covered in papery, inflated balloon-like structures that contain the seeds within. The whole tree looks festooned with mini lanterns.
Backing the Chronological display is a Kalopanax septemlobus. From pink flushed stems hang spheres of black berries, against large, lobed yellow leaves.
