The glasshouses contain a number of economic crops, including the star fruit, Averrhoa carambola.
The south-east Asian Averrhoa carambola is one of the few woody members of the Oxalidaceae, or Oxalis family. The leaves are arranged in a spiral along the length of the stem, and terminate in a cluster. The lavender-pink flowers are tubular and can be produced throughout the year. The juicy fruit is glossy and ribbed in appearance, and is distinctively star-shaped in cross-section. The genus takes its name from a twelfth century Moorish physician and philosopher, Averrhoes.
