A number of autumn flowering bulbs are coming into flower, including this one on the Systematic Beds.
A deciduous bulbous perennial Amaryllis belladonna, or Belladonna lily, is a native of temperate South Africa, where it grows on coastal hills and streamsides. The candy pink, scented flowers emerge in umbels of 6 or more flowers, on a leafless stem which can reach 60cm in height. The strappy leaves emerge only after flowering. Comprising only the species A. belladonna, this is a tender genus, which requires hot, well-drained conditions for success in the open garden. The genus takes its name from a beautiful shepherdess of classical poetry.
