The beds of ornamental onions, Allium, on the Systematic Beds in late spring are bobbing with perfect orbs ranging from deep purple to pale mauve.
Elegant Iris often coincide in flowering, putting on a multi-coloured display, appropriately enough, as they take their name from the Greek goddess Iris, who carried messages from Olympus to earth along a rainbow.
Iris and Allium both grow within the central oval of the Systematic Beds, which is devoted to the approximately 20% of flowering plants that germinate with one seed leaf, monocotyledons.
