This cultivar of the Chinese wolfbane holds one of the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for its robust habit and huge purple blue hooded flowers arrange in panicles around a 1 – 1.5 metre high stem. Placed where the light can illuminate the fine dark purple veining and pompom of black anthered stamens, it is a fine addition to the early autumn border.
All parts of all Aconitum species, also known as monkshoods and wolfsbanes, are highly toxic and can be fatal if ingested. Look, but do not touch and enjoy watching the many bumblebee species seemingly engaged in a huge game of hide and seek in an out of the hooded flowers.
