Featuring selected images from Competition Twelve, the exhibition is a stunning collection, framing the beauty of the natural world. Categories range from wildflower landscapes to trees, woods and forests to wildlife in the garden and showcases the very best of photography. Nestled into the backdrop of our Autumn Garden, the exhibition is mounted on 12 outdoor panels, each panel measuring 1.8m x 1.8m.
We caught up with Tyrone McGlinchey, Managing Director of IGPOTY and one of the judges of the competition, as the installation was going up. Tyrone told us why holding the exhibitition at CUBG is important to him. “I love bringing IGPOTY to Cambridge as we’re based just outside of Colchester, so when we’ve been travelling all over the world, it feels like we are bringing it home to East Anglia! Also, the visitor reaction is always so positive, it feels truly loved and embraced and we hope visitors are excited to see its return this year to CUBG too!”
The competition’s images are all blind judged and assessed on the merit of the image alone, no background information or explanation is allowed, however the exhibition does show the explanatory information, once judging has taken place.
Visitors to the exhibition at CUBG will see the overall winning image, as well as winning images from each category, some of the runners up and highly commended images.
This year’s winning image, called ‘Fireworks’ was by Jill Welham. It was created using a technique known as wet cyanotype. Three allium heads were placed on photosensitive paper exposed to Yorkshire sunlight, then the image was developed using vinegar and washing up detergent to create complex textures. Tryone says: “Jill used this old technique which I think is even more striking in this digital age and it’s always excting as well as refreshing to see people’s ingenuity in capturing plants.”
While Tyrone voted for the winning image, he says he also has other favourites: “For me it’s all about the trees. There’s always so much going on and also so much beauty in the detail.” Another favourite of his is the Wildflower landscapes: “I love seeing the vast panoramas of meadows and I think this category provides the visitor with an opportunity to see and appreciate the beauty of places they may never visit.” Visitors to CUBG will see the winning images in the Wildflower Landscape category which were taken in France and from the Pacific coast of America which Tyrone explains “highlights the contrast of plants in different places.”

It is particularly poignant that as one the last showings of Competition Twelve is erected in the Garden on the last day of October, entries for Competition Thirteen close on the same day.
Having travelled around the world, we are also thrilled to have IGPOTY return to the Garden. The exhibition is now open until 19 December and we hope you enjoy it too!
