We are starting planned, preventative maintenance to preserve the integrity of the timber structure – which means that there will be scaffolding in place, and works going on, for quite some time.
The wooden sections of the Glasshouse Range are being refurbished, which requires a complicated, bespoke scaffold to be built that caters for the unique shape of the building and its contents.
At present, we’re not sure how long the works will last as we’re not quite sure what we will find! A survey of what work is required will be carried out once the scaffold is in place – the project may run until Christmas or longer.
The range hasn’t been restored for over 30 years, hence why we really do need to do this work now.
The works will include:
- Stripping out of all old putty and glazing holding pins.
- Lifting out of each pane of glass in turn.
- Inspecting the timber frame, glazing bars etc.
- Cleaning of timber works and repairing that which has failed (either with a new piece of timber i.e. teak, or filling with a proprietary repair compound for the smaller holes/knots).
- Refitting glazing by bedding on putty and repining as was the original.
- Double coating with Danish oil as a preservative.
