‘The Colours of Cambridge University Botanic Garden’ photography competition

Enter this year's photography competition, run with the International Garden Photographer of the Year

06 June 2022

We are very excited to be partnering again with the International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) exhibition to offer a new, free-to-enter special competition to our visitors. This year the competition is themed ‘The Colours of Cambridge University Botanic Garden’.

IGPOTY is one of the world’s most respected photography competitions – exhibiting garden, plant, flower and botanical photography – and every year runs an international competition which tours across the UK and over the world.

This newly launched competition to capture the colours of CUBG will run alongside the main IGPOTY exhibition and is free to enter.

You can see the winning entries from last year’s inaugural ‘Spirit and Beauty of Cambridge University Botanic Garden’  themed competition here.

“It’s a real joy to see what in the Garden inspires and captivates our visitors. We can’t wait to see what represents the colours of the Garden through our visitors’ eyes (or lenses)!”

Beverley Glover, Director, CUBG

The competition is open to adults over 18 and will run until 31 October 2022, providing our visitors the opportunity to capture the Garden over two of the most beautiful and changing seasons.

CUBG’s Director Beverley Glover says: “We’re really excited to be running this competition for the second year as it’s a real joy to see what in the Garden inspires and captivates our visitors. This year we have a new theme – ‘The Colours of Cambridge University Botanic Garden’ which presents many opportunities to capture landscapes across the summer and autumn seasons, or perhaps intriguing images of favourite plants. We can’t wait to see what represents the colours of the Garden through our visitors’ eyes (or lenses)!”

With 40 acres of different landscapes and a plant collection from all over the world, there is always something different to capture.

“We are excited to see how our partnership with the Garden will inspire visitors to explore their own creative potentials.“

The competition will open shortly and will close on 31 October at midday. Entrants can submit up to eight images.

First prize will be one year’s joint membership to the Garden and a bespoke, private behind-the-scenes tour of the Garden followed by afternoon tea in the Garden Café for up to four people; a signed copy of our new ‘Director’s Choice’ guidebook; a signed certificate and the winning image will be exhibited at the Garden during the IGPOTY exhibition.

Second prize will consist of a complimentary visit to the Garden with afternoon tea in the Garden Café for two people and a signed ‘Director’s Choice’ guidebook; a signed certificate and the image will be exhibited at the Garden during the IGPOTY exhibition.

Third prize will be a complimentary visit to CUBG for two people and a signed ‘Director’s Choice’ guidebook; a signed individual certificate and the image will be exhibited at the Garden during the IGPOTY exhibition.

A selection of winning images is planned to feature alongside the main IGPOTY exhibition when it tours to Cambridge University Botanic Garden in 2023.

Winners are likely to be announced in early February 2023 to coincide with the main IGPOTY competition results.

James McGlinchey, Exhibitions Manager, International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) says: “In the previous inaugural competition IGPOTY ran for Cambridge University Botanic Garden, visitors were invited to explore the ‘Spirit and Beauty’ of the Garden, and a mix of styles were well received. This time around they will be invited to explore the ‘Colours of’ – and we are excited to see how our partnership with the Garden will inspire visitors to explore their own creative potentials.“
